The Lake Morey Protective Association

The Lake Morey Protective Association was founded in 1907, making it the oldest lake association in the state of Vermont. The first meeting was held August 2, 1907, in the Casino at the south end of the lake. Earlier references to “communication by telegraph” reflect the longevity of the organization. Members incorporated in 1934 with the stated purpose of  “…preserving the natural environment of Lake Morey in the town of Fairlee Vermont and its immediate surroundings, and safeguarding the health and promotion of the interests of cottage and property owners.” A board of directors meets three times yearly and governs the LMPA. An annual meeting, held on the third Saturday of July, is conducted at the Lake Morey Resort and is open to all member and guests.

Lake Morey Foundation

The Lake Morey Foundation (LMF) was created in 1984 as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, to encourage and expand upon the efforts of other organizations with the goal of protecting, preserving and enhancing the environment of Lake Morey. Working in conjunction with the Lake Morey Protective Association and the Lake Morey Commission, the LMF provides an opportunity for those in the community who wish to support environmental initiatives. Some examples of the foundation's efforts include the many benches found around the lake, the initiation of the Lake Morey trails, the community beach house, the preservation of surrounding forests and the control of invasive species. Contributions (which are tax exempt)  may be mailed to The Lake Morey Foundation, P.O. Box 234, Fairlee, VT 05045.

Lake Morey Commission

Officially named the Lake Morey Advisory Commission, this five-member body of individuals from the lake community is appointed by the Fairlee Selectboard to provide an interface with the Board on significant lake matters. It was established in the late 1970’s to address the phosphorous loading of the lake that culminated in the alum treatment in 1986 and has been active since 1991 in pursuing effective control methodologies for the lake’s milfoil infestation.

Fairlee Family Fun Day

This annual event was first held in 2008 at the Fairlee Town Beach on Lake Morey in the tradition of Fairlee Day in the early 1900’s. Fairlee Family Fun Day is co-sponsored by the Fairlee Recreation Council and the LMPA. There are many opportunities for old-fashioned fun including relays, swim contests, water events, crafts, face painting, water balloon tossing, and even a watermelon seed-spitting contest!  Participants are treated to a free barbeque and ice cream social as part of the festivities. Fairlee Family Fun Day is held the third Saturday in July from 10AM - 2PM at the Town Beach.  Please let us know if you have any suggestions for improving this event – we welcome all ideas and feedback!

LMPA Greeter Program

The Greeter Program was initiated in 2008 with more than two dozen LMPA members and friends manning the boat access to help educate boaters about invasive species and provide voluntary boat inspections for Eurasian water milfoil.  The milfoil management efforts at Lake Morey are considered a model in Vermont and throughout the northeast.   We plan to continue the vigilance and hard work at the boat access and at our own waterfronts as we work to manage invasive plants and animal species that threaten our Lake.  We hope that all members and lake lovers will consider participating each year as we always need your help. Please contact us to see how you can get involved.

Adopt-A-Lake Volunteer Program

Control of milfoil and other invasive species is dependent upon volunteers and the Adopt-a-Lake initiative is critical to the success of our efforts. We encourage all lake members to actively support this program. Participants can report their hours by completing the form that is available at the town offices or as a PDF at this web site.

Invasive Species (Milfoil)

In 2009 Lake Morey saw the completion of three years of treatment to mitigate milfoil.  By all accounts the treatment has been a success. Non-chemical activities will continue to be employed including suction harvesting along with hand pulling by professional divers and adopt-a-lake volunteers.

Lake Morey Trails

We are fortunate to have miles of beautiful trails surrounding the lake community. Volunteers from the LMPA and the LMF maintain these trails. Like all of our endeavors, we are constantly recruiting supporters. A map of all trails can be found at the trailhead at the boat landing. Additionally, the Cross Rivendell Trails Association maintains the Bald Top section that gives hikers access to their extensive trail network.
