Message: Ben, HAT is well aware of the lamprey issue and the need to aggressively treat the Lake Champlain tributaries for this parasite. We have joined forces with the LCWA to leverage whatever influence we have to get the state of Vermont to become more aggressive in the scope of treatment areas as well as the chemical concentration used. One stumbling block has been "sister" agencies within ANR that have issued permits with reduced concentrations THAT WILL NOT WORK EFFECTIVELY!!! These misguided individuals who have tried to treat with reduced concentrations would have had the real effect of causing a net increase in chemical added to the lake when re-treatment (which would have been required) was performed. Not to mention another year's delay in effective treatment. Luckily, ANR Chief George Cromby and some of the higher ups were responsible enough to require further investigation (with much pressure from HAT & LCWA) and the result was raising the concentration to an effective level. Comm. Laroche reports an excellent kill rate in the Poultney River - a long time major lamprey spawning area. This is a good effort but we have a long way to go and HAT & LCWA will continue to push this effort at every opportunity. Thanks, Ed Replies to this post
