Participants will gain understanding of disability and culture as well as the skills needed to lead their own team or become community leaders.

Parents as Leaders-PCL

Families and staff

Develop a definition of leadership

Define leadership in current and future roles, describe critical roles that parents of children with disabilities played in the history of education, evaluate personal concerns regarding parents’ roles as leaders and advocates

 

Critical Elements of Collaboration-PCL

Families, system of care and staff

Learn the ins and outs of collaboration

Participants will be able to define collaboration as it relates to parent leadership, learn the characteristics and principles of collaboration, define the elements of effective collaboration and identify the stages of team development.

 

Stages of Group Development-PCL

Families, system of care and staff

Become familiar with the nature of teaming

Participants will learn the 4 stages of team development, recognize the characteristics and challenges at each stage of development, learn the ways in which team leaders and other members can help teams move through the stages of team development

 

Tips for Leading Effective Meetings-PCL

Become familiar with the basics of effective team meetings

Participants will learn about strategies for structuring teams so that meetings can be effective, learn about the processes that teams can use to ensure effective meetings, learn about strategies that team leaders and others can use to facilitate effective meetings

 

Listening and Asking Clarifying Questions-PCL

Become comfortable asking clarifying questions in team meetings

Participants will be able to define the importance of listening and asking clarifying questions in collaborative team settings and demonstrate the ability to use the skills of listening and asking questions in role play situations

 

Understanding Conflict-PCL

Become comfortable with conflict, increase ability to recognize different conflict styles

Participants will define various approaches to dealing with conflict, understand the uses, strengths and limitations to various approaches, reflect on personal strengths and challenges in relation to conflict, and the ways in which these can enhance or serve as a barrier to effective leadership and collaboration

 

Re-Framing Agendas: From the Personal to the Policy Level-PCL

Families

Learn the basics of taking advocacy to the next level

Identify the difference between a personal concern and a policy concern, demonstrate the ability to re-state personal concerns as policy issues, demonstrate the ability to describe your policy issue to a person whose support you need to make changes in policy

 

Solving Problems in Groups-PCL

Learn problem solving techniques

Participants will identify the steps needed to engage in effective group problem solving, participate in a group problem solving activity related to participants issues

 

Understanding Diversity-PCL

Basics of diversity

Participants will identify ways in which each of us represents some form of diversity, define benefits and challenges of collaborating in groups involving persons from diverse backgrounds, consider ways to promote the benefits of diversity in future collaborative situations
