NEWPORT RECREATION CENTER- at the Municipal Building will open Wed. Nov 12th at 6pm. The Recreation Center will be open to all to come down and play basketball, pool & foosball. Hours for the Recreation Center to be open will be Weds. 6-8:30pm & Suns. 6-8:30pm. Children, adults and families welcome. The Men’s Basketball League will be starting Monday Dec. 15th, if you have a team or want to sign up individually please call us at 334-6345. A Women’s Basketball League will begin on Tues. Dec. 2nd at 6pm. Teams may register or individuals looking to play games each week. We need 4 teams to get the league started. Call 334-6345 if interested



CHESS CLUB- An organized instructional chess club for ALL levels and ages of players will be held at Goodrich Library beginning on Oct 29th from 3:30-4:30pm.

John Ward Jr. will be providing chess coaching to all participants using visual aids.

Chess boards and pieces will be provided. This is a FREE program. Please call the Goodrich Library to register at 334-7902



DETOUR CAUTION IN GARDNER PARK- Due to the traffic detour of the bridge under construction by RJ’S Market, Gardner Park is closed to thru traffic. For the safety of all park users, please do not try to drive over the grass or around barriers. Allow for time to use the detour and drive safe!



2009 SUMMER STAFF POSITIONS- It’s never too late or early to think about next summer. The Parks & Recreation Dept. is looking to fill positions at Prouty Beach, Gardner Park and the City Dock. If you are handy, like to work with people, be outdoors and responsible please let us know at 334-6345. Our season runs from May-October and some hours outside of those months for prep and shutdown are available.



PRESCHOOL PLAYGROUP- Will open Friday Oct. 31st in the Newport Municipal Buidling Gym. The playgroup is FREE and open to the public. Families with preschool age children or younger are invited to come and engage in social and physical activities using our equipment and toys. Snacks and refreshments are provided. The program is sponsored by Building Bright Futures and Newport Parks & Recreation Dept. and will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9:30-11:00am. We are also looking for a paid Coordinator to facilitate this program. If you are interested call the Newport Parks & Rec. Dept. 334-6345.



ADULT COED FALL VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE- Begins Monday Sept 8th at the North Country Union High School gym. Contact Reg Shafe at the Rec.Dept 334-6345 for more info.

It is the purpose of the Newport Parks & Recreation Department to provide the Citizens of Newport City, with a broad selection of recreational opportunities and leisure time activities. The Department strives to enhance the quality of life in local communities and to develop and maintain future programs and facilities as needed. Recreation is fun for all!

REGISTRATION

Registration for all programs are encouraged through the mail or online. Walk in registrations are accepted at the Rec. Dept. office. All programs are available to City of Newport residents at a discounted rate, and to residents of surrounding communities at a slightly higher fee.
